During August, a group of local
consultants within the EU/UNDP Projects “Enhancement of Living
Standards in Karakalpakstan and Namangan” conducted a series of
workshops on project proposal development with the local Mahallas
(communities) in Karakalpakstan and Namangan region. The goal of the workshop was to involve the communities in the
development and design of public works projects that would contribute
to the enhancement of their living standards. People from 12 village communities of citizens and 11 settlements
participated in the workshops which included representatives of the
Village Council Committee administration, district and local
administration (Khokimiyat), schools, kindergartens, hospitals, and
water utilities.
During the workshops, the
participants learned about the project cycle and development of project
proposals. Divided into small groups, they worked together on specific
project documents, beginning with the identification and prioritization
of problems and ending with the preparation of a budget. The problem areas were chosen in line with the
nationalized Millennium Development Goals and the identification by the
communities of priority problems. As a result, five projects were
developed which are presently being implemented by the communities
themselves. In Karakalpakstan, two communities have mobilized themselves to
repair a school and provide their people with improved sanitation. In
Namangan four communities are working on the repair of the water wells,
one community is working on the set up water pipelines and one
community is working on reconstruction of the building and creating
rural medical point. It is expected that approximately 696 people
Karakalpakstan and approximately 13011 in Namangan will benefit as a
result of these efforts. The workshops and community projects represent an important stage
in the implementation of this EU/UNDP project which aims at improving
the lives of 100 communities in three districts in Karakalpakstan and
in three districts in Namangan region. All community projects are
financed by the EU in collaboration with UNDP. |
