From 26th to 28th
June, 2006 the EU-UNDP "Enhancement of Living Standards" projects
organized a series of sport competitions for children in Karakalpakstan
and Namangan region. The competitions engaged children from six
projects districts of Shumanai, Karauzyak, Kegeily in Karakalpakstan
and Chartak, Mingbulok and Kasansai in Namangan region.
The ELS project teams, together
with the Council of Ministers of Karakalpakstan, the Khokimiyat of
Namangan region and people in communities were the promoters and
organizers of these unique events. The participants – children of 11-13
years of age – took part in physical contests and were keen to
demonstrate their skills. Children who wanted to challenge themselves
further took part in brainteaser competitions, where they tested their
knowledge on EU, MDGs and UNDP. During the awarding ceremony all the
participants of the competitions received prizesThese ELS supported events underlined the
importance of sport, as an educational, health, and cultural
initiative. Sport moves people, both in the literal and figurative
sense to strive for the same goals. Sport has an unequalled power to
promote identity and solidarity among players and their supporters.
When played in a professional and responsible way, it can become a
potent and positive instrument to promote identity, teamwork,
discipline, respect for rules and fair play. The EU Declaration on Sport,
annexed to the Amsterdam Treaty of 1997 and the Magglingen Call to
Action are sport-related proactive initiatives. The Decree of the
President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Sport adopted in 2002
signals that sport is an important instrument to promote national
development. UNDP organized sport events in support to development like
the Match against Poverty hosting football stars such as Ronaldo and
Zidane show that we should continue mobilizing the world of football in
helping to overcome poverty. More importantly all these events all over
the world, and in Namangan region and Karakalpakstan too, have made all
of us aware of one thing: sport has the power to make the world a
better place for present and future generations. For more information on sport and development see: http://content.undp.org/go/newsroom/ronaldo-zidane081105.en
