These words of remembrance are in memory
of Mr. Zavihulla Nasritdinhodjaev, a true pioneer known for his
contribution in the enhancement of living standards of Uzbekistan and
his firm and passionate pro-development stance, who died on April 25,
2007, at the age of 67.
As the Head of the Department of
Demography and Living Standards at the Ministry of Economy of the
Republic of Uzbekistan, the late Mr. Nasritdinhodjaev was involved with
the EU-UNDP Enhancement of Living Standards programme from its outset.
He was engaged throughout the period of implementation of the programme
and helped us to navigate through the intricacies of working with
government counterparts. Driven, yet still witty, humble and sharp. He
was a man of great strength and ideas. With his inventiveness and
willingness to stand for what he believes Mr. Nasritdinhodjaev
contributed immensely to the preparation of the Welfare improvement
Strategy of the Government of Uzbekistan and the success of many
programmes and projects, including the Enhancement of Living Standards
projects in Karakalpakstan, Namangan and Fergana regions. Those who have had the opportunity to work
with him firsthand know that he was able to mix and match the best from
eastern and western cultures. We remember with affection the old radio
playing national music at low volume in his office, the neat desk, the
pencils which were always sharpened, there was a man with an innovative
approach to development, always ready for dialogue. He loved his
country, and devoted his life to serving it as best he could. Zavihulla
was also a loyal friend who was generous with his time and spirit.
We remember him on social occasions,
standing up to give toasts, - an art in which not many can master -
leading the rest of us in his masterful use of language, never losing a
thread, and keeping us guessing as to where he was leading us.
His contributions were far-reaching and
the impact - further than he ever knew. He is forever in our hearts. We
pray — and we offer our respect. |
