The EU funded Enhancement of Living Standards (ELS) and the Area Based Development (ABD) programme implemented by UNDP work on the understanding that knowledge for development is a good that belongs to everyone and from which everyone must benefit. The programme, that helps communities rehabilitate basic infrastructures in rural areas and promote income in rural areas has been collecting a number of lessons learned and good practices since its inception in 2005.
The ELS-ABD programme shared its vision and approach to local development at the Annual Conference of Central Eurasian Studies Society's in Washington D.C. and more recently in May 2009 the Conference on Research for Sustainable Development organized by the Westminster International University in Tashkent. ![]()
Sharing experience and knowledge on a regular basis with community based organizations (Mahallas), civil society, academia, as well as with UNDP and EC colleagues, other development organizations and practitioners helps the programme to remain relevant, tuned in with reality, open to new approaches and cultivate valuable partnerships. In the long run the programme team hopes that this will help widen the programme positive impact on living standards in rural areas and make sure that the results achieved may continue for this and future generations. Those interested to know more about the discussions and ideas generated at the two events may wish to consult the attached documentation. Mahalla system Uzbekistan.rar Community mobilisation.rar |
