The new colourful publication, Towards Sustainable Local Development, has been published and presents a concise overview of the extensive activities conducted during the 5-year “Enhancement of Living Standards (ELS)” and “Area Based Development (ABD)” Programmes.

The brochure, covering the activities of the ELS/ABD Programme between 2005 and 2010, highlights key moments from a range of local development projects.  The publication includes three main sections, corresponding to the main areas of activity: Capacity Building of Local Authorities, Community Empowerment, and Economic Development at the regional level.  In addition, contact details of all ELS/ABD Project offices in Fergana, Andijan, Namangan, Kashkadarya regions, and the Republic of Karakalpakstan, are provided. 

The photographs used in the publication, and the description of project beneficiaries, are drawn from the archives of specific ELS and ABD projects, and represent a rich collection of photos of, and information on,  development activities implemented in Uzbekistan.  

Using “Think globally-act locally” as a  theme to  inform  on  the  nature  of  the  publication,  the brochure provides an overview of the Programme’s  strategic activities, which is, to foster sustainable local development.

The staff of the ELS/ABD Programme involved in the preparation of this publication hope that the brochure provides useful information on the ELS/ABD Programme’s main projects and activities, as well as encouragement to participate in future efforts to support socio-economic development in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
