On October 5th 2005 Mr. Soren Klem of the
European Commission and Ms Kyoko Postill, Acting UNDP Resident
Representative opened the Chordona community primary health centre in
Mingbulok district in Namangan Region. The community of Chordona is located in
the eastern part of Mingbulok district in the southern part of Namangan
region, approximately 15 km from Mingbulok city. Approximately 676
families, about 3105 people live in Chordona. There was no medical
point in the community and people had to travel 10-12 km for medical
care. To save time and money people ended up not using medical services
as they should at the expenses of their own health. Chordona community
reckoned that a health centre is crucial to improve the quality of
their lives and have asked the support of the ELS project. Local authorities have cost shared the construction of the health
centre in an amount of US$ 8,000 approximately. Chordona community has
contributed labour, equipment and skills. The community of Chordona has
applied for a grant from the World Bank to equip the centre. Financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, the Enhancement of Living Standards in Namangan region
project In Namangan offers concrete opportunities to local communities
to become engaged in their socio-economic development and play an
active part in enhancement of living standards.
![]() The project has a duration
of two years (2005-2006) and has three components. It works together
with communities and local authorities first to prepare a regional
development strategy, second to rehabilitate social infrastructures and
third to facilitate access by poor and small farmers to micro financing. Through the second component, the ELS project
supports and encourages 50 local communities and the Khokimiyat in
three pilot districts of Namangan Region (Chartak, Kasansay, and
Mingbulok) to repair and reconstruct essential community
infrastructures. The project uses the Millennium Development Goals for
dialogue between the communities, civil society and local authorities
to address development issues by relying on their strengths and
abilities. More information on community projects supported by the EU/UNDP
Enhancement of Living Standards project in Namangan can be found in the
project brochure. |
