The EU and UNDP supported project
Enhancement of Living Standards projects in Karakalpakstan and Namangan
launch the ELS Internship Scheme
The objective of the Enhancement of Living Standards in Karakalpakstan and Namangan is
translate into practice the vision of the Government of Uzbekistan to
improve people’s lives in two regions of Uzbekistan. The projects give
100 selected communities concrete opportunities to get involved in
their own development and contribute to it. The projects support the strategy of the Government to improving
living standards and achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Both
projects cover three sectors of interventions as reflected in the
National Strategy for the Improvement of Living Standards in
Uzbekistan. They are: regional and local development strategies;
self-help schemes implemented by communities together with local
authorities (micro projects); rural and urban microcredit schemes,
promotion and development of farmers’ and other types of rural
enterprises.
The ELS projects promote traditional forms of community involvement such as the time honoured practice of hashar, support to community forms of self-governance and social assistance such as the mahalla
system, including the mobilization of communities for the development,
monitoring and evaluation of community projects to rehabilitate social
infrastructures. By joining the ELS projects interns will have a chance to learn
about development work, how national and international organizations
contribute to the achievement of the MDGs by the year 2015 and at the
same time get the field experience that they may need to further their
professional career. Interns will be part of the ELS teams in Nukus and
Namangan. An internship with the ELS is a unique, challenging and
rewarding experience. It is also a chance to put to practice skills,
experience and enthusiasm. It gives a unique opportunity to experience
in person what can be done to make Millennium Development Goals happen.
If your background and
interest are in statistics and economics you will have a chance to help
the ELS project teams to research and compile information for the
regional development strategy paper. If you are more inclined towards
small business and microcredits you will learn how microfinance woks in
practice for the benefit of people’s lives in the districts. If you are
a practical person with engineering and do it yourself
attitude, you will help the ELS team and communities to prepare,
monitor and evaluate small water and sanitation projects or rebuild a
school or a primary health care centre. Possibilities are many and
worth experiencing. With the ELS projects, interns will work in a
multicultural, professional, dedicated and stimulating environment.
They will be part of an EU/UNDP team based in Nukus and Namangan
cities. With the ELS you will be expected to learn and practice your
skills. As a non professional you will not receive a salary or
remuneration. However, the costs for subsistence, if you are from
outside Namangan region and Karakalpakstan and travel expenses to
communities will be paid on an ad hoc basis. If you want to know more about this opportunity and how to apply please go to: www.undp.uz opportunities. For more information on the Millennium Development Goals, please see: http://www.un.uz/eng/mdgs.
