In June 2006 the EU/UNDP "Enhancement of
Living Standards" project plans to organize a learning hour with
children in Karakalpakstan and Namangan region.
The learning hour will
bring together 10-11 year olds from the six projects districts of
Shumanai, Karauzyak, Kegeily in Karakalpakstan and Chartak, Mingbulok
and Kasansai to learn about waste management as one of the efforts to
help the country to achieve the MDG 7" Ensure Environmental
Sustainability". This activity is part of component
II of the project which helps 50 communities in Namangan and 50 in
Karakalpakstan to contribute to their own socio-economic development in
the respect for nature and the environment. The motto of the ELS
project when working with communities is: Our environment is our home.
Let’s keep it clean! The children will watch a cartoon on waste
management courtesy of the National Commission of the Republic of
Uzbekistan for UNESCO and the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO
under the production and utilization scheme of PLANET 3 "Waste
Management". The cartoon will remind the children how important a clean
environment can be for their lives and that of their communities.
Children’s imagination and creativity will be stimulated by a present
of colourful books on waste management to take home as a follow up
activity. Teachers will also receive a manual on waste management to be
used in schools. Electronic and video copies of the cartoon will be
donated to school libraries and the Mahalla Fund Resource Centres in
Karakalpakstan and Namangan regions and districts. The project would like thank
National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO and the
Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO for sharing the video and
information material with the ELS project. On similar activities organized by the ELS project in Namangan and Karakalpakstan to achieve MDG 7, please see: http://www.els.uz/en/content.scm?contentId=10625 |
