During the month of May,
the EU/UNDP funded project "Enhancement of Living Standards in
Karakalpakstan" (ELS) inaugurated three community based projects.
The
water supply projects have been completed in the Kirik village of
Karauzyak district, Makan-Kenes #2 in the city of Khalkabad of Kegeili
district and Makan-Kenes #4 of Shumanay district.
These projects were
completed with the financial support of both the ELS project and the
local communities on a co-sharing basis. Communities which previously
did not have access to water are now connected to the main water
pipeline, and thanks to the efforts of the ELS project and the
communities, 353 people in Karauzyak, 255 people in Kegeili and 2000
people in Shumanay now have access to water from the very street where
they live. An EU monitoring mission which was
in Karakalpakstan from 12-17 May participated in the inauguration of
the water supply projects in the Kirik village and Makan-Kenes #2 in
the city of Khalkabad. Representatives from the ELS project, the local
Khokimiyat, the Makhalla foundation, the village community
administration and other stakeholders also took part in the opening
ceremonies. The communities and the representatives of local initiative
groups shared their experience in community mobilization and community
project implementation. As a further endeavor for enhancing living
standards in Karakalpakstan, the ELS project launched 23 new community
projects in three project districts. These projects will improve supply
and access to water, the rehabilitation of existing social
infrastructures and the construction of new ones, for example primary
health care facilities in rural areas. All the projects and the people
behind them share the same ambition: that of assisting the country to
achieve the Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015.
