On 12th June, 2006 in Nukus,
Karakalpakstan as part of Millennium Development Goals advocacy efforts
the EU/UNDP supported “Enhancement of Living Standards in
Karakalpakstan” (ELS) project organized a workshop for students and
media representatives from the three project districts – Karauzyak,
Kegeily and Shumanay. The workshop served to inform
students of the existing development issues in communities. During the
workshop the participants watched a presentation on MDG activities in
Uzbekistan and in other countries around the world. Representatives
from the ELS project gave a presentation on the activities and efforts
of the project directed at the enhancement of living standards in the
three project districts in Karakalpakstan. After the presentations
participants discussed the importance of using the MDGs to identify
problems and prioritize solutions within the communities and districts.
Students, representatives from media and ELS project staff also
explored the existing UN and EC assistance framework for joint
collaboration. They also discuss the mahallas great role in mobilizing
the population in support of MDG activities and their financing at
community level. They agreed that the degree of success in achieving
the MDGs in Uzbekistan will greatly depend on the degree of
mobilization and collective responsibility shown by the communities –
people young and old. The MDGs are unique - not because they represent
an instrument for development, but because they are endorsed by all UN
member states, whose people have committed themselves to achieving
these goals by the year 2015. For more information on the MDGs in Uzbekistan, please see www.un.uz |
