Freshwater is a finite and precious resource essential for life, indispensable for social welfare, economic prosperity and health of the surrounding living world.
No strategy for the improvement of living standards can ignore people’s vital requirements for water. Policies for sustainable development must address the need for equitable and sustainable management of water resources in the interest of society as a whole. Human beings depend on water not only for drinking, but for generating energy, growing crops, carrying waste, for washing and cleaning, and to run machinery. As the human population grows and the world becomes more and more industrialized, demands on fresh water resources are increasing sharply. At the same time, this very growth threatens the water supply through human and industrial pollution.

Keeping water supplies clean, safe, and healthy requires the attention of a diverse group of people - farmers, conservationists, public policy makers, environmental health workers, and population at large. The importance of water cannot be overstated, yet people often take this precious resource for granted. Without sufficient clean water, it is impossible to be healthy and living standards drop inevitably. Without sufficient clean water there is no life.

The EU/UNDP Enhancement of Living Standards in Karakalpakstan, Namangan region (ELS) project is proud to announce the Water for life competition. The competition is organized in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre and the Energy and Environment Unit of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan. This activity celebrates young people’s efforts and their contribution in enhancing living standards The emphasis on the competition is on how young people can contribute to the Millennium Development Goals. Most importantly, the competition will awake young people’s interest in water resource management and at the same time promote water related, studies, small technology and research.

Interested students – from age 14-16 studying and at colleges in pilot districts of Karakalpakstan – Karauzyak, Kegeily and Shumanay and Namangan region – Kasansay, Mingbulak and Chartak are welcome to take part in the competition. All they have to do is to answer the questions of the Water Trivia Quiz and choose to carry out one of the exciting New Millennium Water Experiments. The ELS project will organize a seminar in each of the six project districts in Karakalpakstan and Namangan, on the ins and outs of the Water for Life competition and on general water resource management issues. Those who compete will have fun, learn something new and will be in for a lot of surprises.
