On August 17, 2006, the EU-UNDP funded
project “ELS in Karakalpakstan” inaugurated two health centres in the
villages of Aktogin and Kazanketken and 51 brand new water pumps in six
villages in the district of Kegeily.
More than 8,609 people will
benefit by having an improved access to health care and drinking water. The projects were undertaken in
close cooperation with people in the communities while the local
authorities played an invaluable role and provided assistance
throughout the works. This combination of people and local communities,
it was felt by all, ensured the success of these projects. The communities who participated in
the projects contributed construction materials, free labor, food for
workers, and transportation. As a result, the buildings were
reconstructed and the pumps installed in less than two months, a record
time for this kind of projects. Through these projects people have
shown that they can play an important role in ensuring a better life. These projects are in line with the
Millennium Development Goals of reducing child mortality; improving
maternal health, combating tuberculosis and increasing access to
drinking water. The people in these communities in Aktogin and
Kazanketken can truly say that they have done a lot to help the country
in keeping with the commitment of the Millennium Declaration at the
World Summit of 2000 to ensure a better world for all. When using the
facilities that they have helped to install and rehabilitate, people
will remember their contribution and all the work by their families,
friends and colleagues. Representatives of ELS Project, the
local Khokimiyat, the Mahalla Foundation and medical staff from the
health care centres participated in the opening ceremony alongwith
community people. The participants thanked EU and UNDP and outlined the
importance of working together with the communities and local
authorities when solving the problems that people face in
Karakalpakstan. During the inauguration ceremony
community people and local authorities committed themselves to continue
working together to improve living standards in their communities. The
inauguration ceremony was broadcasted on local television. |
