Fergana, November 10, 2006 - More than
fifty journalists from various media outlets participated in a workshop
dedicated to the activities of ELS Project in Fergana and Millennium
Development Goals.
The event was organized jointly by ELS Fergana team
and UNDP Uzbekistan. Journalists had a chance to learn many new things
about MDGs, Enhancement of Living Standards Project, and Gender. Journalists
from 14 district and 5 cities of Fergana Region, representatives from
Regional Association of Journalists, Regional and District’s TV
stations, and some journalists from Namangan participated in the event. The main objective of the workshop
was to raise awareness of journalists and general public in Fergana
about activities of joint EU/UNDP ELS Project in the region, and how
they are related to reaching the Millennium Development Goals on the
national and regional levels. Mr. Bakhtiyor Sayfitdinov, Project
Manager of ELS Fergana, spoke about achievements and plans of the
Project, explaining to journalists three main components of its work.
He mentioned that Millennium Development Goals and Regional Strategy on
Poverty Reduction, as well as development programmes of the European
Union in Uzbekistan serve as a base for developing the Project’s work
strategy and plans. Members of the UN Coordination
Office presented a session on Millennium Development Goals. Journalists
were excited to learn that Uzbekistan was one of those countries who
signed the Millennium Declaration and adjusted global goals to local
needs. They realized why particular development projects and activities
are so important for Uzbekistan and how they can contribute to
achieving the Goals. Special section during the
conference was given to Gender issues as one of the most interesting
and challenging field of development. UNDP Gender Specialist stressed
that only after achieving the Gender balance and equal opportunities
for both men and women, a society can reach other development goals.
She explained why gender problem is mainstreamed throughout all UNDP
programs and projects, and what each individual can do to contribute to
the achieving of Gender equality. The
presentations sparked live discussions among journalists. They asked
many questions, trying to get more detailed information on the
presented topics. After watching two video-clips prepared by
organizers: on ELS activities in other regions and on MDGs in
Uzbekistan, they expressed a vivid interest to continue discussions, as
well as to participate in similar events in future."This was an excellent opportunity
for journalists in Fergana to learn about global and local development
needs and understand how we relate our activities to meeting those
needs. Since our project in Fergana has just started several months
ago, such awareness-raising events are very important, and we envisage
organizing more events of such kind in future, not only in Fergana, but
in other pilot areas as well", says Laura Rio, Enhancement of Living
Standards Project Coordinator. This article was written by Aziza Askarova, Communication and Outreach Specialist, UNDP Uzbekistan. |
