Today more than 300 children of the Karakul
comprehensive school # 5 of Karauzyak district of Karakalpakstan are
just too excited to use 8 brand new computers received with the help of
the UNDP funded Interim Strategy for Enhancement of Living Standards
(ISELS) project.
“They love it,” said Kamal Toksanbaev, deputy head of school in Karakul pointing out at a group of children patiently waiting for their turn to sit at the computer. “Once they sit there they are simply glued to it” added Abat, one of the teachers. “It’s the first time I use a computer, I thought it was difficult, but it is not: it’s great” told us Turdimuratova Gulaim, an enthusiastic 9th grader with a big smile on her face. Information and communication technology can do a lot to improve the quality of primary education in a country which has achieved the enviable rate of 98% of school attendance at the primary level, but where quality can be still improved.
For the country this small initiative is yet another step to improve the quality of education, the second Millennium Development Goal. For the children, a computer in the class brings together knowledge and fun. The project plans to involve UN agencies such UNICEF and UNESCO to help the children learn more about the history, the country’s beautiful heritage, the environment, health and other issues of interest. So if you are interested to hear more about this exciting small activity in Karakalpakstan, visit or write to us, by computer, of course! |
